From The Loft

For this month’s Loft piece, Queralt Jorba-Lina reflects on living at Earthdance and raising her three children here along with her husband and Earthdance’s director, Daniel Hayes:

Something I've always admired about Earthdance is the phenomenon that often happens the very first moment someone steps through the farmhouse door. It’s as if you can immediately sense a "welcome home" feeling. I wonder what the founders did to pass on this feeling from generation to generation. This sensation washed over me the very first time I arrived at Earthdance in the summer of 2016 while invited by Moti, Daniel was producing the first Touch&Play in the States. From the moment we first set foot on this land, we received a sign that our family — and each of us individually — could grow here. Vitai, at that time, was just three, Osh was conceived here, and Nanuq was born almost a year ago in Andy’s cabin.

I've lived in community my whole life, and I would say my way of perceiving the world is through the intangible realm of relationships, which to me feels as real and tangible as the texture of a cake. At the same time, I need large amounts of alone time to feel replenished. I find such peace in solitude, because deep down, I know I am part of a beautiful community that I care for and that cares for me. Nowadays, my time spent in the collective feels like a maple syrup spoonful, small drops of highly condensed quality time. My days are often spent close to our little family, raising Nanuq, accompanying Vitai and Osh as they grow, sneaking in precious time with Daniel, working on the Touch&Play project, supporting a few relationship counseling clients, and wandering the forest, identifying trees along the way. Wednesdays are special on the land as we do Relational Practice for folks who live onsite. Even though I do not attend every week, I enjoy witnessing each other in our humanity while we hold the commitment to seeing each other beyond the roles we might be holding and the entanglement this implies.

I feel deeply connected to my homeland in Catalunya, where my family has lived for generations and generations. And now, Earthdance is slowly but surely becoming my second home. It has shaped how I perceive both myself and the world. In case you are finding yourself struggling to remember whether you belong here, you are welcome to approach me and together we can dive deep into the state of affairs.

With gratitude,

Queralt Jorba-Lina

Sunday, November 24th, 2024, ritual: 4-7:30pm, potluck: 7:30pm-8:30pm

For this ritual our intention is to invite gentle movement of our bodies and the emotions held there. We will utilize the medicine of communal song and live music to call forward what is ready to be released at this time. We recognize that forgiveness and compassion are essential ingredients of our grieving process. Following our ritual, we will share a potluck meal together at Earthdance.

Gratitude COCO Jam with hosts Paris Cullen and Zohaib Malik
November 28 - December 1st, 2024

Gratitude is a universal language, shaped by culture, tradition, history, and space. Its expression takes countless forms– some bow in deep reverence, others place a hand over the heart. A quiet nod or soft smile might convey appreciation, while joyous songs or dances do the same elsewhere. Through the practice of contact improvisation, we will explore how to connect to somatic awareness, questions, disorientation, and gravity, letting movement reflect both individuality and connection to the earth’s ancient rhythms.

REFLECTIONS OF NOMADIC COLLEGE
Before Nomadic College I had two left feet and the fluid range and coordination of C-3PO. And now… well… I boldly stepped on Shannon’s foot the other day, but hey that confidence wasn’t there before!
Low key, I’m ready to shave my body and down some pink drink after the experiences I had over the two weeks Frey and his company of gypsies spent at Earthdance. The principles taught in Axis Syllabus were like a second physical awakening. A whole new world of grounded awareness was opened up to me, and I have taken many of the things I gleaned into my daily life.
In the days and weeks following I found my ability to lift, move, and throw weight around to be greatly increased, all without pain. Physical labor has never been less strenuous. Balance too, has greatly improved, its been like a light switch as it wasn’t something I felt that I put any conscious energy towards… but balance is just a kind of falling, I guess. (Falling, being one of the courses I took!)
As for dance, well, Nomadic College didn’t turn me into Michael Jackson, but the kind instructors were able to shape this awkward lump of clay into something closer to David than Wallace. I was able to develop a set of tools that have allowed me to increasingly ‘find my dance.’ And the more I am able to open up, the more my body is able to mimic the movement of my soul.
Right now that looks a lot like throwing myself at the ground… and spinning… lots of spinning.
To that last… Nomadic College is a serious curriculum, taught by physically potent instructors and filled with high-level students of movement. And my body was built by abuse, and it takes my engine an hour just to heat up. The way the instructors treated me, especially Neuria and Kerwin was such a gift. It was not expected.
Their attention ensured that I was able to succeed at the level I was at, even as more advanced students were set up to succeed at the levels they were at. My level has since increased thanks in part to the instructors at Nomadic College. I’m ready for the next one, I wish to manifest a reality where I attend many more.

Title

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia.
