From The Loft

A seasonal check-in from our director, Daniel Hayes:.

Summer’s gone and the light is slowly fading. I’m happy to be welcoming the autumn season with one of our seasonal grief rituals, a fitting way to slowly head into the dark together. I feel we’re well prepared. The first fall I arrived, Earthdance was still in COVID shutdown and last year our new team was just getting their feet on the ground. This time around we are all well rooted and even looking forward to a bit of calm and introspection after a busy and expansive summer. The onsite Earthdance community that has slowly regrown since I arrived feels caring and inspiring. Keeping all of this human warmth glowing is furthermore going to be much easier now that we have not just one, but two completely new roofs.

Coming out to see our beautiful Square-barn with its new dark red standing-seam roof is definitely worth it and if you’re not quick the next time you come your view might be blocked by the new solar panels that will be installed in the next month or two. As if that wasn’t enough, and through typical Earthdance mission creep, we communally ended up giving our sauna a full make-over with a completely new metal roof and brightened inside. Our quarry in general is looking so beautiful and for those of you joining the Falling Leaves Jam we might even have an extra attraction waiting for you there…

Warmth, fire, and water are also a welcome reminder that we’re very much involved in the mandatory drilling of a new well out in the forest, away from our buildings, and that any financial support you’re feeling like offering is very much appreciated! And you’ll be able to savor it with every glass of fresh Earthdance water you drink!

A Reflection by CJ on a Summer of Work Exchange with us:

Being a WeXer at Earthdance has been a unique experience to ground into the wonders of nature and focus on the all that feeds my soul. Learning skills in the garden, playing music with the trees, collaborating on projects around the facilities, and of course dancing all around! Living and creating with this community is such a joy that has given me support through the wonderful and the tough times of life. Am grateful to share my gifts and be apart of the magic that happens here

The CiCo Committee is recruiting!

The NC is an itinerant school for the principle study and application of the Axis Syllabus. Rather than a festival, or celebration, The NC is what it’s title suggests, an intensive study context. The study of the AS is meant to empower the individual to defend and promote their own health and the health of those they might be responsible for, in other words to sponsor responsible autonomy.

Relational Forces: A weekend workshop of Contact Improvisation and somatic explorations with Jonathan Brussolo
October 27th - 29th, 2023

“The body is a mystery moved by tangible and intangible forces”

These forces can originate in interaction with other people, the relationship with space and also from the memory of our tissues and cells. Through different somatic dynamics and Contact Improvisation we will seek to sensitize our state of presence and attention in the body. This, in order to awaken a record of the different impulses which can originate from the inherent vitality of the organism, cellular memory, or the interrelationship that appears when inhabiting space and linking with other dancing bodies. These registers and connections could allow us to find a better state of presence and to see what is happening in our dance.

Dancing the Landscape with Frieda Kipar Bay and Dana Iova-Koga
November 2 - 5, 2023

In this workshop, led by Frieda Kipar Bay and Dana Iova-Koga, we immerse ourselves deeply into the inquiry of how to relate to the ecologies on either side of the skin. Drawing from the practices of contact improvisation, qigong, body weather*, wild tending, and deep observation (including tracking, plant ID, and internal states), we will delve into the question of how to dance – and be danced by- a landscape.  In stretching the definition of CI fundamentals (such as ‘sharing weight’ and ‘entering a dance’) to include our environment, we open up new possibilities of how to be human here.

ALL of us, no matter what kind of lives that we have lived, have tales to tell that are compelling to others. Sometimes these are stories of our peak highs and other times, our heartbreaks. They may be stories of the mundane, a funny anecdote or a frustrating family gathering. No matter what the topic, when we share our stories with each other, we find a sense of shared humanity that is deeply satisfying.
