Here we are in August and still feeling the resonance from our 3-day online Moving Arts Lab 2021 event wrapping up July. We learned and gained knowledge from teaching artists from the International Interdisciplinary Artists Consortium (IIAC) and shared a creative and connective space together.

In August, we continue with our monthly outdoor music events to keep us connected outside with one another...and with the music.

Trailblazing cellist and award-winning composer Stephen Katz has charted new territory for the rhythmic potential of the cello with the groundbreaking approach he calls Flying Pizzicato. The results are compositions and improvisations that juggle two or more voices at a time, making music that lays grooves, weaves tunes, and lifts spirits.Stephen has performed his compositions at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and toured internationally as a soloist, and with the Paul Winter Consort, Rachael Sage, Susan Werner, and the Essex String Quartet. He has been featured on American Public Media national broadcasts of Performance Today, and is a NEA grant recipient through the SUNY/Buffalo Arts in Healthcare Initiative. As a film composer Stephen’s score won the Jury Prize Gold Medal for Best Impact of Music in a Documentary at the Park City Film Music Festival. 

Amanda holds the generational beat of the drum in her blood. Both her father and her paternal grandfather were drummers. She grew up in the epicenter of the music world with her family business, Colony Records of NYC. In 2006 she discovered the darbuka, a type of tabla, and passionately began her study of Middle Eastern percussion under the guidance of contemporary percussion masters Raquy Danziger (Brooklyn/Istanbul), Bunyamin Olguncan (Istanbul), and Todd Roach (Brattleboro, VT). She makes regular pilgrimages to Turkey to delve deeper into a style called the Turkish Split Hand Technique and applies these techniques to a variety of drums including handpan, frame drum, riq, and cajon. When her hands are not on a drum, Amanda nurtures her community with her passion for bodywork in a 20 year massage therapy practice in Northampton, MA.

Touch and Play is a separate organization hosting their event at Earthdance.

After the great pause there's no going back to normal… and we were never planning on going back to normal. We are a courageous, weird, kinky, queer, extraordinary, loving bunch of dancers and movers. As we re-emerge we need these gatherings more than ever now, both as restorative healing space and a place to cultivate erotic and somatic wisdom. Our current theme is meant to evoke the tenacity, bravery, vulnerability and inclusion that it takes to be part of a community of somatic pioneers.

Tantra (one of many modalities at T&P) means “to weave”- and is also the tool used to stretch and expand the thread over the loom… or in the case of humans, our bodies and consciousness. A tapestry (also with the root “to stretch”) both conceals and reveals our personal and ancestral stories. Let’s come together once again to share these stories of liberation and heart filled practices of uncovering our messy interwoven truths.

Critical Mass at Oberlin College

Next summer, come join the dancing and celebrate CI. Critical Mass invites practitioners from all communities to join together for dancing, celebrating, inquiring, exchanging.

Critical Mass is hosted by Oberlin College, an historic site for Contact Improvisation, and at 32 years, home to one of the longest running academic programs for the study, practice and development of Contact Improvisation.
