Developing a Character through Embodied Practice

with Allison Ross

February 19, 2012 -
3:00pm to 6:00pm

In this workshop we will explore physically. We will delve into emotional states. We will use our eyes to tell a story. We will use text to inspire movement and use architecture and perspective to create texture and nuance for movement narrative.

My hope is to provide a variety of tools to find a character's essence. Through exploring the capacity of our anatomy, muscular states of tension, and fluid systems, we will hone our abilities to make specific and dynamic choices as solo and ensemble performers.

Biomythography

taught by Gillian Chadsey

February 18, 2012 -
10:00am to 1:00pm

Each of us has a story to tell. These stories are always a mixture of the imaginary, the wishful, and the real. Some of us are gifted storytellers, but it is not always easy translating our stories from the written word to a performativeform. This workshop will focus on short task based exercises designed to harvest our personal histories using writing, movement and installation. We will juxtapose our histories with an assemblage of found texts, images, andsounds in order to discover the link between what has come before to what is possible to come.

Inviting Impact and Endurance

with Taja Will

February 19, 2012 -
10:00am to 1:00pm

This workshop will explore and test personal edges through impact and endurance training using a somatic lens. During this time participants will span the entire spectrum from the passive restful body to fully engaged moving body. Together we'll map our skeletons and then ask the bones how they can best invite efficient impact and test with falling, diving and rolling. Deepening the investigation we'll invite the heartbeat and blood flow to show us a way into speed, increasing gradually until we reach an aerobic state, where we'll stay until we've turned our bodies inside out.

The Un-Layered Body

co-taught by Sandie Luna and Debora Balardini

February 19, 2012 -
3:00pm to 6:00pm

The Un-Layered Body is a workshop on physical theatre lead by Debora Balardini and Sandie Luna, co-founders of the Nettles Artists Collective based in New York City. This dynamic workshop centers on making the body and voice an unhindered, whole, tuned instrument for emotion and expression. Through exercises on "un-layering" the body into a discovery of the hidden in ourselves, we makes focus and awareness the center layer of awareness and assimilation. A visceral connection of body and mind are central concepts of this work.
