Dynamic Alignment: Dancing the Axis Syllabus

with Zoë Solomons & Daniel Bear Davis

June 20, 2019 - 5:00pm to June 23, 2019 - 3:00pm

Programming category:

This weekend workshop finds inspiration in the beauty of natural forms—from the winding forest and fertile gardens to our own rich anatomical landscapes. We turn to our design, inherited from thousands of years of evolution, to seek movement in kind coherence with our physical structures. Through internal observation, skillful intervention, and solo & partnered embodiment practices, we increase our kinetic potential while supporting healthy relationships between our many moving parts.

The Axis Syllabus is an emergent pedagogical initiative that aims to build a system of references for the human body in movement. The study and experience of anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, somatics, and physics is at the heart of our research. This body of knowledge is continuously put in a direct relationship with experiencing movement.

Join us for two FREE public classes with Zoë Solomons & Daniel Bear Davis on Tuesday, June 18th and Wednesday, June 19th 6-8pm to get a taste of the work! Please RSVP Here.

This workshop is open to movers of all kinds and experience levels.

Class Descriptions

A Gentle Entry
with Daniel Bear Davis
(9:30 - 11:15am)

This workshop offers a gentle entry into the day, a gentle entry into central understandings of The Axis Syllabus, and gentle entries into and out of the ground. We will use improvisation and choreographed motifs to build informed and kind relation to our anatomy while gradually expanding our movement possibilities. We seek increased possibilities within moderate ranges - trusting that new patterns arise, not from extension to our edges - but from intimate and inquisitive engagement with our structure and its limits.

Body Ecology
with Zoë Solomons (Friday & Saturday) and Daniel Bear Davis (Sunday)
(11:30am - 1:30pm)

The living human body is an ecosystem that mirrors planet earth, like a pool of water reflecting the intricate composition and interdependent systems of our planet. Can we hold, nurture, respect and journey in exploration of our body as nature and nature as our body? In this class we will examine our physical forms—the inheritance of our ancestors millennia on this planet—in order to understand human movement in action. We may bring the beauty and treasures from the rich Earthdance land to inspire and illuminate our research. We dream to appreciate the fundamental interdependence of humans and nature.

Between Bodies: Fascial Explorations of Partnering and Touch
with Daniel Bear Davis and Zoë Solomons
(3:30 - 6:30pm)

This workshop will use evolving understandings of fascia to explore connection within and between bodies. Body Work, Tango, Contact Improvisation, and engagement with nature will offer varied frameworks for our explorations of “self” and “other.” Accessing fascial intelligence in our dance opens a world of specificity, subtlety, and increased kinetic potential. We will look to these tissues for tools to create resilient structures, find elastic readiness for flight, and direct force with clarity and care.
