DWELL Poetics, Place, and Performance with Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser
August 8 (Sunday evening) – August 13 (Friday afternoon)
This year's DWELL will be a laboratory for the investigation of dance improvisation through the lens of perception, imagination, and the making of places to be and feel alive. Taking inspiration from the work of Joseph Cornell, the mixed media artist known for creating shadow boxes which he called poetic theatresm we will develop compositional methods linking the natural world, the contructed world, and the imaginary. This workshop will include daily practice of release-based movement technique, somatic practices, contact improvisation, composition, and performance. Our aim is to provide students with deep dance experiences as well as methods that they can apply to their own compositional process and teaching.
Chris Aiken is a leading international teacher and performer of dance improvisation and Contact Improvisation. Chris is a Guggenheim Fellow and an assistant professor at Ursinus College. Angie Hauser is a dance maker, performer and teacher. She is a member of Bebe Miller Company and received a BESSIE Award for their collaboration in 2006. Together, Chris and Angie's ongoing collaboration includes Dwell, co-commissioned by the National Performance Network.
Dwell follows directly after our Western Massachusetts Moving Arts Festival. Participants in Dwell are welcome to participate in the Moving Arts Festival as well for a reduced price.
