Suspension [of Weight, Time, Balance, & Disbelief]: A Contact Improvisation Workshop

with Andrew Harwood

April 21, 2016 - 5:00pm - April 24, 2016 - 3:00pm

In this workshop, we will explore the many facets of suspension: the suspension of our weight in the air, permitting a stretch of time and allowing freer movement as we float or hang, delaying a fall; suspension as a system of springs or shock absorbers in our bodies which cushion the impact of our mass into the floor; and the postponement of a judgment, impulse, decision, or opinion, as in "suspension of disbelief."

Figure Space Reunion

hosted by Lisa Nelson & Steve Paxton

March 20, 2016 - 5:00pm - March 31, 2016 - 3:00pm

This 2-week laboratory continues research initiated in a 6-week workshop at Earthdance in 2011/2012 with the same participants. Steve Paxton's Material For the Spine uses a technical approach to explore the sensations of the center of the body. Lisa Nelson's Tuning Scores research composition, communication, and the sense of imagination. The laboratory will combine these unique approaches to observe and cultivate compositional and performance possibilities that arise from these roots of dance motivation. This workshop is not open for new participants.

Action Theater: Wild Mind & Responsive Body

with Carolyn (Shakti) Sadeh & Cassie Tunick

February 5, 2016 - 5:00pm - February 7, 2016 - 3:00pm

Embodied experience opens a vast world of awareness in the present moment. Action Theater introduces essential principles of improvisation rooted in sensation, listening, and deep curiosity. Listen, say yes to what’s offered, take the lead, don’t take the lead, commit, leave. Be alert, generous, and agile. Combine ordinary physicality with a heightened awareness, find new resources of wild-minded response, play whole-heartedly. In this workshop, we will incorporate expressive vocabularies of movement, vocalization, and speech.

The United Body

with Carolyn (Shakti) Sadeh & Susan Schell
(Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend)

January 15, 2016 - 5:00pm - January 18, 2016 - 3:00pm

Grounded in the discipline of Authentic Movement (an eyes closed practice with a witness), we are guided by the relationship between our inner and outer worlds, bringing the questions/invitations: What does it mean to move with intention? What is right action? How important is standing still and listening, seeing and being with what is right before us?
